Toilet Flanges

What is a Toilet Flange and Why is it Called Out on the Plans?

  • A toilet flange is a plumbing connection secured to the floor beneath the toilet to ensure proper installation and function once the plumbing is connected.
  • It is called out on the plans to designate the plumbing's specific location within the floor system. The callout on the plan is labeled as Note 5.52, which indicates the toilet's location from the floor above. This ensures the plumbing has a designated area for the installer, that correct headers are in place, that there's easy access to the connection if needed, and that there are no structural obstructions. Additionally, this ensures that the HVAC trades can run their equipment in a separate bay within the floor system, preventing any potential installation conflicts.

What Does This Look Like on the Plan?

  • The location of the toilet flange is indicated on the floor plan above, with two dimensions: one from the length and one from the width of the space. Note 5.52 points to the toilet flange location and states: “Plumbing Flange Above. Header across joists as needed.” Two dashed lines are used to show the location of the toilet flange header.
