Window Types, Notes, Etc. (Continued)
Below is a more detailed description of the different window types you will see in plan and what they mean. There are also notes associated with some window systems and we will go over what that looks like in the field.
Window Types / Examples:
Single Hung Windows
- In plan a Single Hung window is defined as an “SH” window in the window tag. Single hung Windows are operable, have 2 glass panes, and hung as a single unit. They are also allowed to be egress windows because they can be opened and used as an exit in case of emergency. Not every single hung window can be an egress window as it needs to meet the size / code requirements as mentioned on page 8.
- Examples in plan:

Fixed Windows
- In plan a Fixed window is defined as an “Fix” window in the window tag. Fixed Windows are not operable and hung as a single unit. These windows are not allowed to be egress windows because they do not operate or allow the ability to exit them in case of an emergency.
- Examples in plan:

Slider Windows
- In plan a Slider window is defined as an “Slider” window in the window tag. Slider Windows are operable, have 2 glass panes, and hung as a single unit. They are also allowed to be egress windows because they can be opened and used as an exit in case of emergency. Not every slider window can be an egress window as it needs to meet the size / code requirements as mentioned on page 8. The arrow on the plan elevations determines the direction the window operates.

Tempered Windows
- In plan a Tempered window is a type of window that is defined by the letter “T” or “Temp” in both plan and elevation. Tempered windows can be any size or type of window in plan as it has to do with the type of glass that is in the window. Tempered glass is a type of safety glass specifically treated to enhance its durability and safety compared to regular glass. It undergoes a controlled thermal tempering process that significantly strengthens the glass and alters how it breaks upon impact. A tempered window is defined by code depending on the location and height that the window is at.
